There are few things more disappointing than taking a bake out of the oven to find that things haven’t gone to plan. You can have followed the recipe to the letter, but sometimes that’s not quite enough! To help combat this feeling of disappointment, Jane Rylands, from the kitchen appliance manufacturer Belling, shares her top baking hacks that will help you harness the power of your oven to make the perfect cake, scone, or muffin each and every time.

Make sure your oven suits your needs

Whether you’re looking to buy a new oven, or you want to know how you can get the most out of your existing set-up, it’s important that you consider the difference between fanned and conventional ovens.

Fanned ovens achieve an even temperature throughout, as an internal fan constantly circulates the air around the oven. This means you should get your desired results, regardless of which shelf you use. This is ideal for batch baking and means you can really make the most of the space you have.

With a conventional oven, the top will typically be hotter than the bottom, so you will need to put some extra thought into which shelf you use each time. This is because you’ll get different results depending on whether you place your bake at the top or bottom of the oven.

Know which oven rack is best for your bake

As previously mentioned, if you have a conventional oven, the top will usually be hotter than the bottom. So, when you’re baking, it’s important that you think about where you should put your cake or pie for the best results.

For example, if you want to heat something up quickly or need to create a crisp top layer, the top shelf will be the most suitable. The bottom rack is better for anything you’re looking to cook more slowly, or foods that need to have a crunchy bottom, such as pizza. And, the middle rack is perfect for when you want to cook something evenly all round.

Choose your cookware carefully

In order to get the perfect bake every time, you need to be thinking carefully about the cookware you use. Conductivity is key, which is why metal cookware is particularly popular among seasoned bakers — it heats up far quicker than its glass or ceramic counterparts.

If you prefer to use ceramic dishes, make sure these have thick bottoms, because this will help to retain heat, cooking your bake more effectively. And, if glass tends to be your cookware of choice, ensure anything you plan to use for baking is oven-safe, and remember that these kinds of dishes tend to take longer to heat up.
