  • small skull and crossbones cutter
  • small ball tool

  • piping bag
  • 2D piping tip

1

Using a knife, create a dome of buttercream on the cupcake and cover with a circle of skin tone sugarpaste slightly bigger than the cupcake.

2

Use a ball tool to mark where the eyes and nose should go, then cut a ball of paste in half and attach with glue for ears.

3

With an edible pen, draw a line starting above one ear and going across above one eye for an eye patch string.

4

Using a cutter or an open tube, cut out circles of white paste and press them down on top of rolled out red paste.

5

Place a sheet of baking paper over the top of the red paste and spots and carefully roll over the top of it.

6

Use the same large circle cutter you used to cut the faces out, to cut spotty circles and then cut them in half using a pizza cutter.

7

Stick the spotty semi-circles onto the faces above the eyes at a slight angle, trimming further if necessary.

8

Use a flat tool or knife to create different mouth shapes.

9

Create the facial features and bandana knot from paste, making them all a little different to add character.

10

Glue them in place and then add stubble and scars using an edible pen.

11

Create a map shape from card and use it as a template to cut maps out of thinly rolled modelling paste with a scalpel.

12

Using a little brown and yellow dust mixed with vodka, create a wash to discolour the maps and paint it on with a brush.

13

When the maps are dry, add details with an edible pen.

14

Create a buttercream dome on the cupcake and then dip it into a bowl of light brown sugar until completely covered.

15

Scrape the sugar off of the centre of the cupcake and pipe a small blob of buttercream there to stick the dry map to.

16

Create a flag shape from card and use it as a template to cut flags out of thinly rolled paste with a scalpel.

17

Cut skull and crossbones out of thinly rolled white modelling paste and stick onto the centre of the flags. Pipe a buttercream swirl onto the cupcake and place the flag on top, positioning it so it looks like it’s moving.

18

When the maps are dry, add details with an edible pen.
