Cheese biscuits

Looking for a biscuit with a difference? Try these delicious cheesy poppy seed biscuits

Biscuits and cheese aren’t often two things you’d put together, but in this case, it works perfectly! Sprinkle in some seeds and you have a crunchy savoury biscuit worth sharing.

We’ve been inspired by Biscuit Week on The Great British Bake Off to try out some new biscuit recipes. Find our recap of the episode here!

TIP: You can use any hard cheese in these biscuits, such as Cheddar, Red Leicester or Parmesan. To add variety, top the biscuits with various different seeds. The baked biscuits can be frozen if wrapped well in clingfilm.

Servings 12

  • 25 g self-raising flour, sifted
  • 25 g self-raising wholemeal flour, sifted
  • 50 g butter, diced
  • 100 g hard cheese, finely grated
  • 1 free-range egg, beaten
  • 10 g poppy seeds

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 ̊C/Gas Mark 6, then grease a large baking sheet.

  2. Place the flours in a large bowl. Rub in the butter, add the cheese, then bring together with your hands to form a sticky dough.

  3. Roll out the dough onto a well-floured surface to about 5mm (1⁄4in) thick. Cut out shapes with a cutter, then transfer to the baking sheet. Brush the biscuits with beaten egg and sprinkle with poppy seeds.

  4. Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes or until golden. The biscuits will keep in an airtight tin for up to four days.
