10 minutes with Bobbie's Baking Blog

18th Jul 2017

Bobbie is a cake, cookie, and cupcakes decorator with no formal training, but with an unlimited sense of creativity.  On her blog she and her daughter Sydney share their designs and fun stories! When college came knocking at the door for Sydney in her senior year of high school, Bobbie’s Baking Blog helped them deal with the transition. Bobbie tells us a little more about her life... When did you start baking? 2007   Where did you learn your baking skills? I am mostly self taught through books.   How would you sum up your style? My stlye tends to lean towards vintage and elegant.   How would you describe your day to day life running your business? I am extremely busy, I write two blogs, have an online store, and Youtube channel. Although my shop is open from 10:00 am to 6:00pm, I work around 80 hours a week. I tend to want to handle everything myself and it took time for me to learn to delegate. I spend most the week decorating cookies/ cakes for my youtube channel, consult with clients,  and prepare orders both online and in person for my clients.   Which one of your recipes is your favourite? My Strawberry Macaron recipe is one of my favourite recipes.   What is your usual process? Are you quite cool and calm or is it organised mess? I work best in a relaxed and focused  atmosphere with controlled chaos. I like to have music playing in the background to help relax and keep me focused. I like to have fun in the kitchen by trying not to take myself too seriously and experiment with new techniques. I try to remind myself that while this is a business and I tend to be a perfectionist, at the end of the day I am working with sugar and everything can be fixed. What are your top three essentials you have with you in the kitchen? My top three kitchen essentials are my magimix food processor, my kitchenaid standing mixer, and my hands.   Where do you get your inspiration from? My inspiration comes from antiques, artwork, vintage cards, nature, art deco, and other countries I have traveled to.
What are your top tips for a beginner? My tips for a beginner include:
  • Take your time, mistakes are the best way to learn
  • Practice as often as possible
  • Find a cake/cookie decorator you admire, try to reach out to them and ask questions
  • Don’t be afraid to expereiment
  • Have fun!
What are you plans for the future? I will be starting online royal icing/fondant decorating classes, advanced cookie/cake decorating classes and two beginner decorating classes.
