A great day at our Unicorn Masterclass

16th Mar 2018

To say that our masterclass went well would be a complete understatement!

With a lovely group of 12 friendly cake decorators and a collection of cake decorating stories from all abilities, we arrived at Ginger Whisk Cooking School in London, excited to 'grab the Unicorn by its horn' and create our very own cake masterpieces. The class began with an introduction to our two class mentors and cake decorating experts at Ginger Whisk who made everything look easy, Lucy Cufflin and Lucy Lee-Tirrell. Their brilliant sense of humour and light-hearted approach immediately put any nerves at ease and made everyone feel comfortable and ready to start decorating their cakes. Our delicious carrot cakes were supplied by Sweet Success Sugarcraft and went down an absolute treat with the attendees, making great bases for our Unicorn creations. Once the cakes were layered and the edges smoothed with buttercream, it was time to add the sugarpaste which is a lot harder than it looks and runs the risk of your cake looking more ghost-like than Unicorn! Then came the trickiest of tasks – moulding the Unicorn's eyes, ears and of course the horn itself...     As a result of our hard work, chatting and our creative minds working at full throttle, it was fair to say we had all worked up an appetite and were looking forward to a delicious lunch cooked by the lovely people at Ginger Whisk. We were not disappointed! The lunch was an incredible spread of freshly produced dishes to cater to all tastes and dietary requirements of everyone involved and we were even treated to some homemade sweet treats including lavender flapjacks! Belly's full and sweet tooth's satisfied, it was time to tackle the icing and really make our Unicorns come to life using a range of vibrant, delicious and easy to use piping bags full of buttercream. With the finished details in place, from edible beads to ribbon and gold paint, it was time to take a step back and look at our creations and of course, have a photoshoot! The masterclass provided clear instructions and great tips that we're sure will have benefited everyone involved in the class and taught them the necessary skills to perfecting a Unicorn cake in the comfort of their own homes. After the huge success and having had such an enjoyable time at the masterclass, we are looking at getting another class sorted for some time in the foreseeable future. Of course, all details of these classes and a poll to decide what cake theme we do next time will be featuring on our social media pages very soon so make sure you keep an eye out and have your say in what cakes we decorate next!
