Meet Christine McConnell, a gothic baker from LA with a skill for creating grotesque, scary, and ultra-realistic cakes... Christine McConnell is part stylist, part performance artist with an acquired eye for retro, surreal and anarchic scenarios. Los Angeles-based multi-talented artist Christine McConnell is a professional stylist, photographer, model, and artist, who also bakes pastries, confections and gothic cakes that look like cookie monsters, terrifying spiders, dreadful snakes, and even the ever-so creepy Facehugger. And she does it all dressed as a very glamourous 1950s American housewife, whilst still managing to put her unique and deliciously dark twist to everything she creates and puts on her Instagram page. As McConnell states herself, she has had a life-long fascination with aesthetics, which inspired her to bring beauty to her life in any way she could – from her fashion choices, to the different types of art she creates. Christine says, “I have a new idea almost every other minute and I hope I never lose the energy to keep learning and trying new stuff." Christine originally trained as a hair and make-up artist, but taught herself to bake watching YouTube videos. And it's no surprise when you take a look at her Instagram page that she names her idols as Tim Burton, Vincent Price, Alfred Hitchcock, and Paula Deen. "I’m very enamoured with the style of the 1940's, '50's, and '60's," she told BuzzFeed. "But I love the goofy sense of comedy that came out of the 1980’s. So my work is kind of a pretty/spooky combination of those things."
