We’re barking mad about the new range of novelty cakes appearing in Sainsbury’s stores.

With over 2.7 million Instagram posts using the hashtag #sausagedog, and searches for Dachshund-related items at Sainsbury’s growing by 65% in the past year, the supermarket chain has decided to indulge our obsession with a brand new Sausage Dog cake. Sammy the Sausage Dog is a rich chocolate sponge cake layered with smooth chocolate buttercream. Joining him in the Sainsbury’s by range are Debra the Zebra and Nancy the Narwhal. Both of these are light and fluffy Madeira sponges filled with lashings of raspberry jam. Debra the Zebra Lexie Mackintosh, Product Developer at Sainsbury’s, told us: ‘It’s no secret that the nation continues to look at platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest for creative and fun baking inspiration – but it also means there are more eyes on centrepiece cakes than ever before. Our new range of delicious and trend-led cakes takes the stress out of any party planning and helps our customers celebrate in style, no matter the occasion!’ The tasty trio is part of Sainsbury’s re-launch of celebration cakes. The re-launch will see seventeen new cakes join the range from 3rd October, offering customers a total of thirty-two showstopper desserts. Among the favourites are the Unicorn cake, Oscar the Teddy Bear and Rory the Lion. For those less animal-obsessed, a salted caramel drip cake and a sweetie smash cake can also be found in most Sainsbury’s stores.

The full product range will be available at Sainsbury's stores nationwide from 3rd October, priced between £5.00 and £13.00.
