Gingerbread biscuit recipe

This simple recipe for gingerbread by Carol Deacon is perfect at Christmas time for some fun family baking!

This easy gingerbread recipe by Carol Deacon will make around 10 gingerbread men and 22 hearts (depending upon the size of your cutters).

Ingredients

  • 90g (3oz) butter
  • 150g (5oz) soft brown sugar
  • 90g (3oz) golden syrup or black treacle
  • 425g (15oz) plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon mixed spice
  • 1 medium egg (beaten)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas mark 4. Gently heat the butter, sugar and syrup (or treacle) in a saucepan until the sugar dissolves. Place the pan to one side and leave the mixture to cool for 10 minutes.

Sift the flour and spices into a mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. Tip the melted mixture and the beaten egg onto the flour and mix in.

Knead to a soft dough consistency. Roll out on a floured surface and cut out your shapes. Place onto a greased baking tray and bake for 15 minutes until lightly browned. Place onto a cooling rack to cool.

Decorate your gingerbread men with icing, sweets, or however you like!
