Ingredients

For the cake

  • cake of your choice, covered in sugarpaste (I used Renshaw black extra) or buttercream

To decorate

  • 40-50 g marshmallows
  • black edible paint (I used Sweet Sticks)
  • white flower paste

Equipment

  • circle and heart cutters in various sizes
  • small knife
  • paintbrush (No.2)
  • edible glue
  • gloves

Instructions

1. Roll out a small ball of white flower paste until around 1mm (1/8in) thin, then use cutters to cut out a selection of circles and hearts for the eyes. Slice the hearts in half to make two perfect evil-looking eyes.

2. Add a little edible glue to the cake, then stick the eye shapes on – don’t add too much glue or the eyes will slide down. Continue to cover the cake in various sizes of eyes.

3. Once you are happy with the amount of eyes on the cake, use a paintbrush and black edible paint to paint the centre of each of the eyes, taking care not to add too much paint onto the brush. Vary where you paint the pupils as this makes it more fun!

4. Pop the marshmallows in a microwave bowl, then microwave them for 10 seconds at a time until you feel it just starting to go soft and melt. This normally takes one or two 10-second bursts.

5. Put the gloves on, then pick up a small amount of marshmallow on your fingers; it will be very sticky. If you find it is not stringy enough, just wait for it to cool down for a few minutes and the strings will start to appear more.

6. Once a little marshmallow is on your fingertips touch them together, then slowly stretch them out and you’ll see the strings appear. Wrap the strings around the cake, closing your fingertips together and opening again to make more strings. Continue to add the marshmallow strings around the cake as much as you like to create the perfect spooky spider web cake!
