We spoke to Rachel from Artistic Flair Crafts to discover the path that led her to doing a job where she works for herself and enjoys every minute. If you could do what you love, would you? Rachel found something that she enjoyed and was good at and took the opportunity by the horns. We spoke to her about her life running a business... What lead you towards the path of creating stencils? I used to bake and sell celebration cakes and cupcakes and would often hand cut stencils out of plastic to make a design just right or to create a repeat pattern. Then after getting quite a lot of compliments I decided to design “proper” stencils that were affordable and that anyone could use. Do you still manage to fit in time to bake/decorate? I don't bake nearly as often as I would like to. But I love designing stencils and seeing what lovely goodies other people can create! How would you describe your day to day life running your business? Hectic! I like to think of myself as very organised and structured, yet I always seem to find myself running out of hours in the day. I love my work though, so it never really feels like a job! What has been your biggest achievement or something that has made you feel really proud? I'll never forget my first proper order. With all the months of hard work and sleepless nights that went into creating our first products and launching the website, I'll never forget how proud I felt when that first person placed an order. Knowing that people want to buy something that you have created is very humbling. Which one of your creations is your favourite? I always love the Hibiscus Cupcake stencil. But since Christmas is coming up, I have been trying out lots of Christmas Cookies with the Let it Snow stencil! What is your usual creative process? Are you quite cool and calm or is it an organised mess? Definitely organised mess! I'm always seeing things that give me ideas for stencils so I'm constantly snapping photos of flowers or patterns that I like. But sometimes I'll just doodle on a piece of paper. So when it comes to creating the stencils, I have to bring all of my random bits and bobs together! What are your top three tips for somebody wanting to start a business? Visualise what you want to achieve and make a step by step plan of how you are going to get there. Be prepared to work hard and be open-minded about changing your approach if something isn't working. Where do you get your inspiration from? Nature mostly. But it can be anywhere – I could see a gorgeous pattern on a scarf and just have to take a photo! What do you love to do when you aren’t working? I have a 4 year old Labrador, so nothing beats getting lost in the woods with her! What are your plans for the future? We just want keep expanding our range, adding more and more stencils and then hopefully adding our own brand of baking tools and equipment.
