Guinness Soda Bread

This soda bread recipe is the quickest and easiest way to make fresh bread. It even uses one of Ireland’s most popular tipples for added flavour!

What could be a better way to celebrate St Patricks Day than by baking a loaf of their famous soda bread? This is the quickest and easiest way to make fresh bread, and this recipe even uses one of Ireland’s most popular tipples for added flavour, Guinness!

Guinness Soda Bread

Serves 6-8 | Preparation time 10 mins | Baking time 40-45 mins

Ingredients

  • 450g white bread flour
  • 50g rolled oats
  • 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 150g live natural yogurt
  • 200ml Guinness

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200˚C/180˚C fan/gas mark 6. Grease and flour a baking tray.
  2. Place all the dry ingredients into a large bowl and mix together, then add the yogurt and Guinness and mix to form a soft dough. Turn out onto a well floured surface.
  3. Knead together for 2 mins and form into a ball, then flatten the top and place on the prepared baking tray. Press a deep cross pattern in to the top of the bread using the handle of a wooden spoon.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 mins until the bread is well browned and the bottom sounds hollow when tapped.

TIP:

* Try adding 50g of sultanas to the recipe for a fruity tea time alternative.
